PROTECTION PETITION
Psalm 141 expresses a petition for protection, the opening lines of the Psalm:
“Lord, I call on you; hurry to help me.
Listen to my voice when I call on you.
May my prayer be set before you as incense,
the raising of my hands as the evening offering.
Lord, set up a guard for my mouth;
keep watch at the door of my lips.
Do not let my heart turn to any evil thing
or perform wicked acts with evildoers.
Do not let me feast on their delicacies.
Let the righteous one strike me—
it is an act of faithful love;
let him rebuke me—
it is oil for my head;
let me not refuse it.
Even now my prayer is against
the evil acts of the wicked.
When their rulers will be thrown off
the sides of a cliff, the people will listen to my words,
for they are pleasing.
(Psalm 141:1-6)
Some of the petition is a plea for protection from enemies. But the structure of the Psalm is for personal protection from within. The guarding of the heart, the eyes and thoughts. This is compounded by bringing recognition of the body parts to be aligned and controlled:
The hands (v.2)
The mouth (v.3)
The lips (v.3)
The heart (v.4)
The head (v.5)
The ears (vs.1,6)
The eyes (v.8)
LORD, I call on you; hurry to help me.
Listen to my voice when I call on you.” (v.1)
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Jesus
