FIELD TRIP
“A field trip or excursion is a journey by a group of associated peers, such as coworkers or school students, to a place away from their normal environment for the purpose of education or leisure. Popular field trip sites include zoos, nature centers, community agencies such as fire stations and hospitals, government agencies, local businesses, amusement parks, science museums and factories. Field trips provide alternative educational opportunities for children and can benefit the community if they include some type of community service. (Wikipedia)
I don’t recall any field trips when I was in the lower grades at school. Perhaps they classified that trip to the Police Station as a field trip (just kidding, maybe). Recently I read a statement about ‘what’s the most memorable trip you have taken.’ A person named Maria wrote: “I don’t know if it was the coolest, but it was the most impactful: In seventh grade, we took a school bus to the local landfill and drove around on it, experiencing the magnitude and stench of the mountains of garbage. I have been a recycler ever since.”
I’m sure Field Trips to the Fire Station, City Hall, Library, Animal Shelter and Vegetable Farm, etc. are valuable to the students, but after reading this I believe it should be mandatory that all students take a Field Trip to the local land fill (dump) and drive around and experience “the magnitude and stench of the mountains of garbage” and have the teacher explain what’s’ going on. Experiential education.
What a great idea some teacher had for their students.
