A HUMMING HEART
I keep hearing words about ‘the need to hum.’ It seems to be an invitation to minister to the Lord as we re-set our internal person.
I recently read an article along this line: ‘While breathing and exhaling deeply while humming for 2-3 minutes can change our metabolic rate for healthier function.’ For example, take a slow song (or no song) and slowly hum through it, then sense the feeling in the mind and body.
With closed eyes, I chose ‘Amazing Grace’ and hummed this song (which I don’t particularly care for) and was surprised by the changes. I was actually a little light headed. Then I decided to try a Merle Haggard love song, and the same thing happened. I’m OK now.
Humming is not new to me. For many years I have hummed during gathered meetings while others are singing and playing instruments. It often seems more appropriate to me. Humming and silence are important expressions in my time with the Lord. So is singing. I’m from a family of singers and I love to sing and at any time may burst out in song after humming.
