SHOE DEAL
When I was a kid growing up my brothers and I had two kinds of footwear: Church Shoes and Tennies. Church Shoes were only worn to church (duh). Tennies were worn everywhere else: School, play, work, swimming, adventures… but not to church (except on Wednesday nights).
By Tennies I mean black high-top canvas Tennis Shoes with white rubber soles made by Converse with a round rubber logo with a star on it at the ankle of the shoe. They have been around 110 years and Nike purchased Converse in 2003.
When we got new Tennies the first thing we would do is take a ballpoint pen and draw pictures, numbers or make statements on the rubber part of the shoes. We personalized our shoes and then they were our Shoe Deals.
I had no idea that this would be the beginning of bigger Shoe Deals for others down the road. For example:
Michael Jordan $110 million and share of shoe sales.
LeBron James $32 million a year plus share of shoe sales (life-time contract).
Kevin Durant $28.5 a year for 10 years, $285 million.
And so on down the line of famous athletes…
And this all started out there on Worth Road with my brothers and I wearing our Black and White High Top Tennies. Pretty amazing.
