PAYING ATTENTION
One of the greatest disciplines we have in our culture is paying attention… to one thing at a time. We pay attention, but our attention is split in as many directions as we have apps and other information to draw us away.
My concern is when we finally get to prayer, meditation, silence, solitude… the inner life, the quiet life; we are split here as well. Our attention is more and more difficult to harness into a single direction and motive as we pursue the Presence of the Lord.
The Spirit can only be realized and strengthened by a real and consistent attentiveness. There are many enemies to confuse and draw away our souls and none of these enemies is as prevalent and deadly as the cell phone.
“And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Jesus
