YOU NAME IT
Most folks have opinion about their name. They either like it or they don’t, or wish they had not been named after their father or mother or Uncle Clyde, Uncle Everett or Aunt Martha or Aunt Bernice… or a favorite movie star or athlete. Now many names are all natural; Sierra, River, Ocean, Pinecone, Buttterfly or Snowflake, Sea Salt and Sea Weed (twins), Zebra, Driftwood, etc.
The scripture has many statements about what is named starting with Adam naming all the critters. (Genesis 2:18-20) Or like these:
“Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars?
He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing.” (Isaiah 40:26)
“But now, O Jacob, listen to the LORD who created you.
O Israel, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1)
“The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” (John 10:3) He knows our name.
“Those who rule them shout in exultation. My name is blasphemed all day long. But I will reveal my name to my people, and they will come to know its power. Then at last they will recognize that I am the one who speaks to them.” (Isaiah 52:6) We know God’s name.
“To everyone who is victorious I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away in heaven. And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands except the one who receives it.” (Revelation 2:17)
I like my name Ben just fine… but maybe the new one will be Sampson…
“Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” Jesus
