YARD SALE TREASURE
One of the seven Kingdom parables Jesus gives in Matthew 13 is The Parable of Hidden Treasure.
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure, buried in a field, that a man found and reburied. Then in his joy he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field.”
(Matthew 13:44)
This man stumbles on something very valuable and key to parabolic teaching is to not name the item but to compare it with the value of finding the Kingdom of God. Finding God’s way is finding treasure worth selling everything to possess.
It reminded me of a little note I read recently: “A portrait of a fisherman sold at a yard sale for $50…it might be a Van Gogh worth $15 million.” (Wall Street Journal)
(Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) Dutch painter, whose art sells for millions of dollars) The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has refuted the painting in this story.
It appeared the man had found an art treasure. It has not been verified. If we have found the Kingdom of God… only we can verify it personally.
“Then in his joy he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field.” Jesus
