WORDS OF AMAZEMENT
“And they were continually amazed at His teaching, for His message was with authority”’ (Luke 4:32).
“Never did a man speak the way this man speaks” (John 7:46).
This was the response in the gospels to the teaching and words of Jesus. It is interesting how they were compared to ‘the scribes’ who had no words of authority. They were the normal voice for the people of God, and therefore the people were normal, or dead in religion and tradition. They gave them nothing but history lessons, cute little stories, and clichés, worn out one-liners, and three-point puny marshmallow sermons ending with some pep talk and a greeting card sentimentality. They had no authority, no substance, no reality and no life.
The comments that followed Jesus were Triple AAA rated: They were Astonishment, Amazement, and Authority. These were the three descriptions that followed him from city to city and village to village. He brought new life and new light with His words. He still does.
“Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.” Jesus
