WILD GOOSE WISDOM
“The wild goose is a Celtic symbol of the Holy Spirit. Geese in a flock have greater range and fly faster than single geese as they benefit from the lift of their wings. When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into formation and another flies at the point position. We fly in sacred community, interdependent with one another.” (From the Iona Community, Scotland)
Couple this with G.K. Chesterton’s remark:
“We men and women are all in the same boat, upon a stormy sea. We owe to each other a terrible and tragic loyalty.”
These comments only confirm the teachings of scripture. Paul, an apostle, wrote: “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other” (Romans 12:4-5). He also wrote: “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27).
As disciples of Jesus, there is a time to be alone to make us more useful when together.
“Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” Jesus
