WHO DO WE SAY
Identity and lack of identity is the buzzword conversation of our times. Jesus also made a strong issue about his identity. He plainly asked his disciples: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They answered, “Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah, and still others say you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” (Matthew 16)
I don’t think that question has changed much. Some say you are a Baptist… Methodist… Pentecostal… Catholic, Thich Nhat Hanh, New Direction, Buddha, Mohammed, Taylor Swift, Abraham Lincoln, Pope Francis, Caesar, Oprah Winfrey, Child of Light, Judge Judy, Alexander the Great, LeBron James, Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet, Lutheran, New Age, Willie Nelson, Martha Steward, Kevin Costner… or just a mystical spiritual feeling in my inner ego cosmic construct. Whatever… Whoever…
But then Jesus asked his disciples: ‘But who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.” (Matthew 16:16-17)
If any of us know who Jesus is it is because the Father has revealed it to us. Christianity is a revealed religion.
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.” Jesus
