TWO WELLS
When we are thirsty we need water… and we may need to ask someone to give us a drink. When Jesus asked the Samaritan woman in the city of Sychar for a drink of water, it was from Jacob’s Well. This well had been there since (Genesis 33; Joshua 24) the days Jacob bought this land and put in the well and eventually gave the land to his son Joseph. The Samaritan woman drew water and gave Jesus a drink from Jacob’s Well.
Jesus changed the conversation to Spiritual Water to quench a spiritual thirst. He told the woman that everyone who drinks water from Jacob’s Well will thirst again but whoever drinks from the Jesus Well will never thirst. Jesus called it “living water” and “a well of water springing up to eternal life.” (John 4:10,14).
It is obvious that we need water for both our physical thirst and our spiritual thirst. I think Jesus was clear about that. He was also clear one will not deal with the thirst of the other. We need to drink from Two Wells: Jacob’s Well and Jesus’ Well. They are two different waters…from two different wells.
Like the woman said, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
“If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” Jesus
