TWICE UPON A TIME
Many stories begin with once upon a time but this story is twice upon a time. It is when the Pharisee Nicodemus came to Jesus by night to ask a few questions. He told Jesus “no one could do the signs you do unless he is from God.” Jesus did not answer this statement but simply told him “unless one is born again (or from above), he cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
Of course Nicodemus answered, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” In other words what’s this twice upon a time business?
Jesus answers the twice upon time question: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’” (or born twice)
Each of must decide and answer if we have been born once or twice…upon a time. Only in the flesh (once) but also in the Spirit… (twice).
“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Jesus
