TRYING TO GET AHEAD

There is an old saying: ‘Just trying to keep my head above water…’ This is certainly a good idea or we might drown.

I have also noticed that when we are trying to keep our head above water we are often in over our head in overhead. This can be overwhelming. There is more than one way to drown.

So what should we do? If we are in the water…cry out for someone to rescue us and pull us out. If we are in over our head in overhead…seek someone with wisdom in how to go over our head to show us how to deal with our overhead. It is usually quite simple: Don’t spend more than we make and don’t make decisions that lead to unnecessary debt. Try to do as little emotional shopping as possible. Grab the ropes of reliable lifeguards. Pray to learn how to swim better.

Getting ahead is getting certain things into our heads.

“And do not say, ‘By the earth!’ because the earth is his footstool. And do not say, ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the city of the great King. Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black. Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.” Jesus
