THIS IS REALLY NUTS
While visiting family recently I noticed a bowl of mixed nuts in the shell, a nutcracker and a little pick thing to dig out the meats. The bowl contained walnuts, pecans, almonds and hazelnuts and Brazil nuts. There was also a bowl of pistachio nuts near by. It seems there is usually a Nut Bowl at our family gatherings…hum.
What I had not realized before was how competitive and aggressive we become enjoying a Nut Bowl. There is something about the cracking, shelling and eating that presents challenge. It is the breaking open of the shell, getting inside, pursuing with dominance and determination picking out every little speck of nutmeat while displaying control. It is like an addiction. We go from one to the next.
We are most obviously addicted to the Pistachio Nut. The little Asian nut has taken full place with other nuts of choice. But this little nut with the shell already partially split just right for our fingernails to rip them apart is almost drug like. Maybe because we can so quickly crack, shell and eat them our challenge engine revs even higher.
It just seems odd that the Nut Bowl is the only food where those eating them high-five and click fists and pat each other on the back while eating/winning over the little nuts. We win. This is really nuts.
No, really, this is what happened.
