THE WILD GOOSE
The Iona Community, founded in 1938 by George MacLeod, is an ecumenical Christian community of men and women from different walks of life and different traditions within Christianity. This community is on The Isle of Iona, Scotland. It started as Iona Abbey and was founded by St. Columba in 563 AD and has been through many transitions over the centuries until it was rebuild as a Christian Community under MacLeod. It has a famous history of evangelism, worship and healing… and still has this reputation.
The symbol of the Iona Community is the Wild Goose. Iona Community literature remarks, “The wild goose is a Celtic symbol of the Holy Spirit. Geese in a flock have greater range and fly faster than single geese as they benefit from the lift of their wings. When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into formation and another flies at the point position. We fly in sacred community, interdependent with one another.”
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” Jesus
