THE SOURCE OF LOVE
Gerald G May, M.D. (1940-2005), wrote, “Grace comes from somewhere. It is given to us by someone or something. Our yes to love is a response to someone or something. I have said that efficiency is the how of life and love is the why; now we address the who. I call this someone or something God. It is a word and a name to which we all have many conditioned responses. Whether our responses make us comfortable or ill at ease, we can be sure of one thing: our understanding of God is not God. God is love, but love is not God. God is creator, but we also create. God is immanently within us, yet at the same time transcendently beyond us. God’s grace is all-powerful, but we are always free to turn away from it. If love is always more than we can understand, how could we ever expect to comprehend love’s source?”
John, an apostle, wrote, “We love because he first loved us.” (1John 4:19)
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.” Jesus
