THE INTERNAL COVENANT
The Book of Jeremiah chapter 31 is one the richest and most relevant books because it is filled with promises for a people returning in deliverance from captivity in Babylon. There are two major restorations. The first is physical: “They will come home and sing songs of joy on the heights of Jerusalem. They will be radiant because of the LORD’s good gifts… the abundant crops of grain, new wine, and olive oil, and the healthy flocks and herds. Their life will be like a watered garden, and all their sorrows will be gone.” (Jeremiah 31:12)
The second is spiritual: “The day is coming,” says the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves his wife,” says the LORD. But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the LORD. “I will put my instructions (My law) deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Jeremiah 31:31-33)
It is the finished work of Jesus that brings us the Internal Covenant of Love written in our hearts and on our minds.
“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.” Jesus
