THE FOUNDATION
Paul, an apostle, wrote, “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11)
Just after this statement the apostle tells us of two possible kinds of foundations we can build our lives upon: one is a foundation “gold, silver and precious stones” and the other is “wood, hay and straw.” (3:12)
Then he gives us the reason why: “each one’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each one’s work. If anyone’s work that he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss.” (3:13-14)
Gold, silver and precious stones are refined and purified by fire and wood, hay and straw are consumed and destroyed by fire. What we are building and relying on must be built on Jesus Christ the foundation stone (Ephesians 2:20) and upon this stone the “wise master builders (the apostles and prophets)” build what will last. All else is manmade and sawdust.
“Upon this rock I will build my church…” Jesus
