THE DISPOSITION POSITION
It has long been a concern of mine that I often do not have the disposition needed for a position I may be in. I also know and have explored the many scriptures and experiences that tell me I will change and ‘become like Jesus’ and that has certainly kept me grabbing my tail with both hands.
A disposition is this: a person’s inherent qualities of mind and character. We are all becoming and growing if we want to, and are willing to work for it and stop blaming others, DNA, money, circumstances or whatever for our dispositions. The old line, ‘All of the Smith’s are that way’ doesn’t fly at all when you are born again from above. Some of us form more slowly than others…but we do form. We can change.
Jesuit priest Anthony de Mello (1931-1987) wrote: “You must cultivate activities that you love. You must discover work that you do, not for its utility, but for itself, whether it succeeds or not, whether you are praised for it or not, whether you are loved and rewarded for it or not, whether people know about it and are grateful to you for it or not. How many activities can you count in your life that you engage in simply because they delight you and grip your soul? Find them out, cultivate them, for they are your passport to freedom and to love.”
Maybe ‘cultivating activities we love’ is the secret to having a disposition for our position. To some this seems natural and for others of us it is truly super natural.
“Be careful! When you do good things, don’t do them in front of people to be seen by them. If you do that, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.” Jesus
