TEST FOR HUMILITY

Andrew Murray (1828-1917) minister and author wrote:

“It is easy to think we humble ourselves before God. Yet, humility toward men will be the only sufficient proof that our humility before God is real.” 

Murray was a powerful preacher and prolific author. He wrote about 50 books and dozens of tracts. I remember in my early days reading many of Murray’s books and I recall several ongoing themes: prayer, the Spirit-filled life, sanctification and always…humility.

Perhaps if we turn this thought around some we could say, ‘unless we live in basic humility before others, we have little chance of even knowing true humility with the Father.’ What we might know is religion and tradition instead.

Thomas Merton (1915-1968) prayed, “The desire to please you does in fact please you.”

Humility is a most pleasing thing to the Lord and others.

“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Jesus

“Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jesus
