SOUL POSSESSED
The ceaseless desire ‘to have more’ and ‘to know more’ and to ‘experience more’ is based on the response of inner powers all at work to possess. These powers are strong and developed. Through practice and training we can help ourselves to hear better, think better, see better, know better, and possess better. All this has a certain dark side as well. Lust and covetousness at their basis is simply to want to possess, for whatever reason, an illegal possession. I am not here speaking of the abnormal, but the normal, part of possessing. We are made to do certain things by our nature. Perhaps it goes back to the scripture, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” This is pretty much an all-inclusive idea. But this is still is not what I am after here. This text is more like a commission, or a command or a charge. My reference is to something else.
We are carefully and wonderfully made to be what we are and with our cognition and transcendence we are different than any other created thing. We have soul capacity. We have the breath of God breathed into us. Though a dog, an ape or a lizard all have breath, it is biological breath (bios) and we have that as well, but we also have soul breath (zoe), or soul capacity that allows us to possess God. All else responds to life out of keenly developed senses but we respond to life with our senses and our souls. The soul is designed for possessing like anything else. The soul is to possess God and for God to possess the soul.
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus
