SLOW OF HEART
Two men left Jerusalem after the crucifixion of Jesus and headed out of town to Emmaus. They left before being convinced that he had arisen from the grave and were walking the seven miles northwest talking about all that had happened in the last three days. They were down in mouth discouraged and ready to chuck the whole Messiah deal.
Jesus appeared to them while they are walking and listens for a while and said: “O fools! And slow of heart to believe what the prophets have spoken!” (Luke 24:25) “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5-12. Isaiah told of the Messiah 700 years before and Daniel 9:25-26, about 500 years). These two had forgotten and were ‘slow to believe’ what the prophets said.
Jesus reminded them: “Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter His glory?” He was trying to explain to the two downhearted disciples that what happened at the Cross, the grave and third day resurrection were foretold and supposed to happen just as they did. (Luke 24:26)
The two said to one another: “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the way and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” (24:32)
To me a loving part of this interchange is this:” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.” (24:27) Now, I would like to have been seated at that Bible Study, listening and taking notes.
“Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?” (24:38) Jesus
