SLIPPING AWAY
I really appreciate the way this verse is translated:
“But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.” (Luke 5:16) Another word used here for wilderness is ‘a deserted place.’ We might just say, “He went to the boonies.” The point is that he went there “to pray.” He went there to be alone, quiet and internal.
We can certainly pray without going to a deserted place and most often that is the case for us… however we must also know that driving in our car can also be a quiet and deserted place. When everyone else is at school, work, shopping, at sports, games, or hobbies and we are left alone… we are in a deserted place. This is our time to slip away. We slip away to pray and to be in the presence of the Father.
If the Lord did it… maybe we should too… ‘slip away to the wilderness’ place to pray.
“Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” Jesus
