SELF-DESTRUCTION
I often feel I need to repent of abusive and destructive words I have thought to myself about myself. There are many times these same words have been used on those I love the most. But until I can deal with the destruction of myself and the issues of self-abuse… I cannot deal with the full acceptance of a Father who has said, “You are my beloved son and I am well-pleased with you.” Then perhaps I can deal with the damage done to others both intentionally and unintentionally.
Though a Father can know in a positional way a son’s love and acceptance, this does not always mean the son can know the Father’s love and acceptance. We often don’t know because we simply do not believe what we have been told by the Spirit and by scripture. Our bad-mouthing can self-destruct and destroy others and us. But… it is interesting that to think hyper positively about one’s self can be just as destructive.
The book of James states, “So also the tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage it can do. A great forest can be set on fire by one tiny spark. And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is full of wickedness, and poisons every part of the body. And the tongue is set on fire by hell itself and can turn our whole lives into a blazing flame of destruction and disaster.” (3:5-6) “And the tongue is set on fire by hell itself.” Yikes! This means that our own words can destroy us.
“For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Jesus
