SEEING AND HEARING I
Seeing and Hearing. I believe this has to do with the need to see and hear well consistently. This is not only to be a keen observer and listener but also to be present and attentive to others. Jesus said:
“It is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For to him who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance. But from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. Therefore I speak to them in parables:
‘Because they look, but do not see. And they listen, but they do not hear, neither do they understand.’
In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which says:
‘By hearing, you will hear and shall not understand,
and seeing, you will see and shall not perceive; for this people’s heart has grown dull. Their ears have become hard of hearing, and they have closed their eyes,
lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts, and turn, and I should heal them.’ (Isaiah 6:9-10)”
But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.” (Matthew 13:11-16)
As this conversation starts out, Jesus tells us why we need to have keen careful eyes and ears: “You have been chosen to know the secrets about the kingdom of heaven, but others cannot know these secrets.” (13:11) If we desire the mysteries (secrets) of the Kingdom we will also desire to watch and listen with renewed faith awareness.
“But you are blessed, because you see with your eyes and hear with your ears.” Jesus
