PILLAR OF SALT
The story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is one well worth remembering. The angels of the Lord appeared to rescue Lot and his wife and two daughters from the destruction of the cities. “For we are about to destroy this place, because their outcry has become so great before the Lord that the Lord has sent us to destroy it.” (Genesis 19:13)
“The sun had risen over the earth when Lot came to Zoar. Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven, and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. (Genesis 19:23-28)
Jesus said: “Remember Lot’s wife.” (Luke 17:32)
The original word here by Jesus means to look or to see. In this context, it suggests a longing or desire for what was left behind. Looking back can symbolize: A return to old ways, a reluctance to fully embrace the new life in Christ or nostalgia for a past life of sin or comfort.
I think we often see what others have, are doing, or buying, or driving…etc. and we might get a little salty. Looking back too long could turn us into a block of salt.
“No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Jesus
