LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
“Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject you as evil on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and jump for joy, because your reward is great in heaven” (Luke 6:22-23).
This verse is rather formidable and certainly does not seem to cause one ‘to jump for joy’ when others hate us, exclude us, insult us and reject us as evil. It is just the opposite of ‘normal’ or ‘natural’ inclinations. It does not seem like a good ‘jumping for joy’ message.
I don’t really think when one is treated in this way that we are supposed ‘get happy’ or thrilled over the matter. I would say if someone enjoys this kind of treatment they are deceived about the intention of suffering. It must be settled within each person that we are life and light and that darkness and death will oppose us. Little needs to be said or done to feel the bite of evil. If one stands tall and straight for Kingdom principles there will obviously be repercussions and consequences. No one should jump for joy when getting the stuffing beat out of his or her body, emotions or mind. Our only joy is the blessing of obedience to Jesus… if possible.
However, ‘the word translated blessed in these passages means to be fully satisfied. It refers to those receiving God’s favor, regardless of the circumstances.’ Blessing is being fully satisfied in being a disciple of Jesus and a daughter or son of the Father. I don’t personally think it is possible to live this message without the power of the Holy Spirit. Then our life is supernatural trying to deal with these joy-jumping issues when called upon. Otherwise, I am apt to retaliate in a very natural way to such abuse… maybe even as a Spirit-filled disciple. Help me, Jesus.
“God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom Heaven is theirs.” Jesus
