LIGHT MY CANDLE
Darkness may cause us to lose our way, become disorientated and confused. David wrote an encouraging phrase for us when we sense we are having a ‘dark time.’ Psalm 18:28:
“Surely, You will light my candle. The Lord, my God, will lighten my darkness.”
Wise David knew that we can get so upside-down that not only are we in darkness, we can’t even find a match to light our own candle to find a way out. He knows in mercy that the Lord will even light our candle for us. Other versions say ‘light my lamp’ or ‘turned on my light.’ If we could have found a light we probably would have done so instead of standing around grabbing the darkness with both hands. Desperation can cause us to call for the Candle Lighter.
But that’s not all. Later David writes, “Your hand shall guide me, and your right hand shall take hold of me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light shall be as night about me,” even the darkness is not dark to you, but the night shines as the day, for the darkness is like light to you.” (Psalm 139:10-12)
So, the Lord lights our candle, illumes our way and holds our hand to guide and hold us safely through to the light. This is a comforting thing to have in our minds and spirits. Lord, light my candle.
“Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. He who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.” Jesus
