IRRIGATING OUR FAITH
Recently in the night I heard: “We need to irrigate our faith….”
First of all… anytime you hear ‘irrigate’ in the middle of the night… it may not be the Lord talking. One must interpret carefully.
As usual, I certainly wondered what this might mean. To irrigate is obviously “to supply water to land or crops to help growth.” And a second idea from the medical world: “to apply a continuous flow of water or liquid medication to (an organ or wound).” Both of these definitions seem to fit nicely with what I was hearing. It was somehow translating water into a life-giving resource for faith. The first definition was to help give growth to faith and the other to cleanse and purify the faith function.
I immediately thought of John 7:37 “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him.”
Faith without the Spirit of God is religion. It might be old men or women in little Red Hats or Big Black Robes carrying Oversized Gold Crucifixes or Little Smoke Boxes. Or it might be young men and women in tight jeans with holes in the knees, an un-tucked shirt, tennis shoes, a four-day scruffy beard and many tattoos… or whatever. Without the Holy Spirit we will not be irrigated in our faith no matter how we look.
“But I will send you the Advocate…the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.” Jesus
