HOLD FAST TO OBEDIENCE
Teresa (1910-1997) wrote “Your work on behalf of God’s kingdom will be better carried out if you know how he wants you to carry it out, but you will have no way of knowing that, other than by obedience to his word. Submit to it, just like ivy. Ivy cannot live if it does not hold fast to something; you will not grow or live in holiness unless you hold fast to obedience.”
I have used this quote before and I am always inspired when I run across it. My thought this time was: We all hold to the Bible for our guide and inspiration but maybe we also can become solid enough in character to be a trusted person for someone to hold fast to as a guide and example. We should be this by nature to our children. The key to being an example to anyone else is to hold fast to obedience of God’s Word. Then, as Teresa says, ‘our work on behalf of the Kingdom will be better carried out.’ Perhaps we can be someone that others can hold fast to as a strong pillar.
As Anne Lamott wrote, “Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining.” Perhaps that is our pillar work as well…just standing and shining.
