HEAVEN AND EARTH
Heaven and earth is a common term in scripture. It most often has the idea of God ‘up there’ and us ‘down here.’ With the coming of Christ ‘in the flesh’ (John 1) we now have example of ‘heaven on earth.’ Jesus phrased it, “May your kingdom come, and your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).
It is the Father’s heart to join heaven and earth. John wrote:
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them” (Revelation 21:1-3). “All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children” (21:7)
Paul, an apostle, wrote of this union: “For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross” (Colossians 1:19-20).
Paul also wrote to the Ephesians: “God has now revealed to us his mysterious will regarding Christ—which is to fulfill his own good plan. And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth” (Ephesians 1:9-10).
The New Jerusalem (coming down out of heaven) will be brought to us… we don’t need to go anywhere… except to the Cross.
“When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.” Jesus
