HEARING BELLS
I recently kept hearing bells in the merry-go-around of my mind and as often happens I tried to listen for what the bells might mean, or were warning or saying to me. I was reminded of passages I have always liked from Zechariah 14 concerning the coming time: “And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be the only one and his name the only one.” (14:9) O what a day that will be! As these wonderful conditions are explained further it says, “And on that day there shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses, “Holy to the Lord” (14:20). All of the cooking pots, bowls and everything will be “Holy to the Lord.” (14:21)
While hearing bells I also read about Bear Bells. A Bear Bell is a small 1.5-inch bell with a Velcro strap used for attachment to a person’s clothing, backpack or belt. The idea in the article was that these bells would scare away bears while a person hikes through the woods. I have been in the woods and backcountry wilderness many times in my life both on foot and horseback and I can tell you the last thing I would want dingle-dangling on me is a Bear Bell to reveal to a bear where I am. Bears can smell you one mile away as is, and if you have been in the backcountry 3-4 days they can probably smell you 2-3 miles away. I would play off the Zechariah passage and say with these bells we would be, “Wholly for the Bear.”
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” Jesus
