HATING SELFISHNESS

George MacDonald (1824-1905) a Scottish minister and author wrote, “To be right with God is to be right with the universe; one with the power, the love, the will of the mighty Father, the cherisher of joy, the Lord of laughter, of all glories, all hopes, who loves everything, and hates nothing but selfishness, which he will not have in his kingdom.”
There are many marks to living in Kingdom reality and I thought it very insightful of MacDonald to point out that the Lord “hates nothing but selfishness, and will not have it in his Kingdom.” There is simply no place in the Christian life for a selfish heart but rather the teaching of the Lord is self-donation. We are to give ourselves away as he did. The Bible teaches there are seven deadly sins… but selfishness (or pride) is the cause of them all.
