GREATER WORKS
Just after John 13 and ‘washing of feet’ at the Lord’s Supper, Jesus says in John 14:12 “the works that I do shall he do also and greater works than these shall he do, because I go to the Father.”
The greater works is ‘lower’ than John 13:1-17 of washing feet. We will go ‘lower’ which is our ‘greater’ because we have learned ‘the way of the Master’ (v.16). Greater is not ‘the work that I do you shall do also’ (14:12) but greater is lower than 13:1-17, just before He refers to the ‘new commandment of love’ (13:34-35) and proceeds to ‘the Father’s house’ and ‘greater works’. You will reveal the Father in great ways (14:27-31) we show the Father by our faith and actions.
Greater is Lower- more disguised than 13:1-17. Simple, loving, gracious presentation is the greater work.
What is greater than healing the blind? Loving blind people who are not healed.
What is greater than raising the dead? Mourning with those who are left behind after someone dies.
What is greater than calming the sea? Having mercy on the fearful.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”
