GOD GAVE THEM OVER
Three times in the Book of Romans chapter 1 the text says, “God gave them over” (vs. 24,26 & 28). Here are the three reasons God gave them over: v.24: “God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, v.26: “God gave them over because of their degrading passions, v.28: “God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper.”
Before “God gave them over” we are told in v.18, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.” The wrath (extreme anger) of God is because his name and purposes and truth have been suppressed (ignored).
We are without defense in this matter and so are all others. The text continues, “because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse” (vs. 19-20). God gave them over… not man. And we are just as vulnerable to the wrath of God.
The Book of Galatians reminds us, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.”
“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” Jesus
