EXPLAINING OR DEMONSTRATING
It was not enough for Jesus to only describe ‘Father God,’ it was necessary to ‘explain Him’ (John 1:18) and most importantly to demonstrate Him. To only know information about God is not enough for the contemporary person, or for the person of Jesus’ time or for me personally. We need to see him, hear him, touch him, talk to him, and know him. When we do, we become representative of him. No one is very interested, or I hope they are not, in only learning about a historical and informational Jesus. There is no life in a message of facts and figures, but rather it is in experience and living, thought and sound, sight and recognition, that we form and articulate our message.
Perhaps the fear and intimidation of thinking we can be like Jesus and represent Him to others is what prevents us from pursuing deep prayer and meditation. We just might become what we pray for and what we meditate upon. We better make sure we are full of bread and wine for such a task as this.
Jesus, Lord of Life, make your purposes clear to me, demonstrate your ways again and again. Lord, I know I can only really know who you are because of what you have done in me. That much I can tell to another. Thank you, Lord.
“You study the scriptures thoroughly because you think in them you possess eternal life, and it is these same scriptures that testify about me, but you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.” Jesus
