EXERCISE OR EXISTENCE
Prayer is an exercise or it is an existence… or maybe both. Meaning we can make prayer a specific time and place event or it simply becomes part of our existence. Training ourselves with a discipline of prayer, silence, solitude, giving, speaking truth, fasting and serving are good ways to be formed in habits that make us disciples. On the other hand, as we have trained ourselves and been trained by the Word and voice of the Father, these things become our existence rather than just our practices and exercises.
What we train for and the habits we acquire and hold on to become who we are. Our exercises become our existence. It is not either/or but after exercise training it does not take much of a conscious decision to be a normal disciple, because we just exist as followers and apprentices of Jesus. But like physical, emotional and mental exercise…spiritual exercises must be practiced or we soon slip away into laziness of spirit like laziness in any other exercising.
