DOING/BEING DISCIPLESHIP
Doing Discipleship is to Do the Disciplines. Dallas Willard has written about the disciplines as carefully as anyone I have read. He lists them as:
Disciplines of Abstinence
Solitude
Silence
Fasting
Frugality
Chastity
Secrecy (learning to love to be unknown)
Sacrifice
Disciplines of Engagement
Study
Worship
Celebration
Service
Prayer
Fellowship
Confession
Submission
But after years of processing some of this I have come to this conclusion: Doing disciplines is only to become the disciplines. It is Being as much as Doing. If we can become each of the disciplines instead of just doing them, we may become normal disciples instead of religious performers.
“But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting isn’t obvious to others but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Jesus
