CRYING ROCKS
In Luke 19 during the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem a few days before his crucifixion, we read “On the way down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of followers began joyfully shouting praise to God for all the miracles they had seen.” (v.37) Then, “Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell your followers not to say these things.” (v.39) Jesus answered, “I tell you, if my followers didn’t say these things, then the stones would cry out.” (v.40)
“The idea of rocks crying out in praise to the Lord is poetic, startling imagery. Throughout Scripture are similar poetic passages that present inanimate objects praising God. For example, in Psalm 114:6, the mountains leap. Isaiah 55:12 says, “You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” Throughout Psalm 148, there are numerous examples of created things praising their Creator—the sun, moon, stars, heavens, water, sky, animals, and people. Everyone and everything was created for the pleasure of the sovereign Lord.” (Got Questions)
Shortly after Jesus’ triumphal entry, the people were quiet. And, by Friday, they were yelling for Him to be crucified (Luke 23:18–23).
Lord, make my stony heart cry out for you and your mercy. Crush the rock hard mind that does not want me to praise you. Lord, let me praise you before a Mulberry Bush, a chicken or a coyote beats me to it.
“If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” Jesus
