CONSOLATION
Real spiritual consolation is different from simple human understanding of an obvious need, and providing a “helping hand” although such may be needed. The key to understanding consolation is to know that the very same word for console is also used in the Bible for the word comfort, and many times for the words encouragement and exhortation. To minister consolation (or give encouragement) is the very same word used for comforter when the Lord Jesus said, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit” (John 14:26).
The ministry of consolation is, for sure, a special gift and calling for some. All Christians must bear responsibility for some consoling, but some seem especially equipped. We have all enjoyed and benefited from some dear person in Christ that came quietly in strength and humility, with understanding eyes, a listening heart, a strong arm, a deep Spirit, and a sensitive mind, and brought comfort to us. They always seem to talk just enough and bring a word from the Lord, and they always seem to know what is going on because they have first been with the Lord. They are filled with the Holy Spirit of Comfort. The Spirit was sent to give comfort, and so is this consoler who comes to us. The Spirit is called the Comforter-Helper – the Consoler (John 14:26; 15:26; 16:7). The one who consoles others in the Name of Jesus must know the Holy Spirit in a very personal way.
“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” Jesus
