AMUSING GOD
“Theology is the study of God and God’s ways. For all we know, dung beetles may study us and our ways and call it humanology. If so, we would probably be more touched and amused than irritated. One hopes that God feels likewise.” Frederick Buechner
For a long time I have felt it ‘amusing’ to think I can ‘study God’ and have rock-hard opinions. When beginning these studies years ago and finding answers like, God is aseity (existence originating from and having no source other than itself), immanent, immutable, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient and many other ‘attributes,’ I knew I was in trouble.
I have never wanted a simplistic God but neither have I wanted a God in some theological swamp of muddy water from man’s late-night scholarship. God must be a little amused at our efforts but then again none of this is a threat or contradiction to God. If we feel our studies and inquiry of God are anything but amusing then we should look for another god.
