BELLY TITHE
Tithe means tenth, or a tenth part of something. In the Old Testament law there were various and progressive tithes paid in the Jewish system. The concept of the tithe was never practiced or taught in the first century church. Instead what is called ‘freewill offerings’ was the concept used to support the work of the church. Under the New Covenant I am opposed to keeping the Old Covenant laws as it relates to tithes and offerings. We should give as ‘we have purposed in our heart to give’ according to the apostle Paul.
In addition to tithing our money, we might consider tithing our weight. My physician, Dr. Bliss told me that ‘if most Americans would lose 10% (tithe-tenth) of their weight we would be a much healthier people.’ I don’t know what he was thinking when he told me that? What a simple concept to solve a huge (get it) problem. Tithing our bellies. So, since I weigh about 119 pounds (or so) I need to belly tithe about 11 pounds…(or so). But then again, I don’t believe in tithing.
“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Jesus
