LEAVING FATHER AND MOTHER
There are two important times where scripture tell us to leave our father and mother. The first is marriage where we are told that that a man is to leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two are to become one flesh. This can be very difficult both for the man and the woman, but it is critical.
The second time we are told to leave our father and mother is to follow Jesus as disciples. We are encouraged not to love anyone and anything more than we love Jesus. Otherwise we cannot be his disciples.
The emotional, psychological, physical, and soulish issues that entangle us from lack of obedience to these instructions are tremendous. Many marriages fail because a spouse is compared with a father or mother. The expectations are unrealistic and often one or the other becomes a parent/child in the relationship. The same patterns can be true with discipleship. One or the other is not like the tribe (church) or religion the other came from and one or the other becomes the pastor/parishioner or teacher/student to the other. Meaning one is right and other wrong.
Answer: Leave your father and mother and become your own thing. The sooner, the better.
