CANNON IN A CANOE

The term ‘a cannon in a canoe’ (a large gun in a small boat) is used to describe someone with a large talent or giftedness but without the character and disposition to use it with wisdom. We see this in politics, business, ministry, military, education, and many other areas. Without character even a large gift becomes small.

The apostle James wrote “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” No one can get too jacked-up about how talented and gifted they are with out quickly giving credit to the Father for giving the gift. The Lord seems to be more impressed by faithfulness and character than by talent. The gift is the Father’s part and the character is our part.

An old monk said, “If an angry man raises someone from the dead, God is still displeased with his anger.”

You can’t fire a cannon from a canoe.
