THE WAY OF SONS
Sonship is not a generic designation but by its nature is a relational position. It has nothing to do with being female or male and everything to do with being just like the Father. It is not gender, but progeny. Jesus spoke much about ‘knowing’ the Father, and spoke of it, not only for Himself, but also for us. He said, “All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” We are to know the Father as Jesus knows Him, and to serve Him as Jesus served Him and to be to the Father what He was to the Father, a son.
Jesus knew God as Father and He served Him as Son. He was truly Son to God as God was Father to Him. It is a certain kind of truth that says, “no one knows God except the Son,” and the greater truth is that the only way for us to know the Father is to be a son. The only way to know God is to know Him as Father, for that is the only actual relation we can bear to Him. We can only realize our relationship with Him by realizing His relationship with us as sons. Sons know and realize the Father by bearing His nature, by sharing His Spirit and living His life. His grace and love become our grace and love.
“All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” Jesus
