IT’S A SIGN

John the Baptist was a sign preacher. A sign points to something or tells us something. The sign preacher always knows at least two things: One, he has ‘a word from God.’ Two, the One he is talking about is ‘mightier than he.’ There is no telling what might happen if we all could remember these two things. It could be a sign and a wonder. If we stop being a sign we become a scandal.

Preparing the way of the Lord allows Jesus, who is Father’s power and love, to come to any person with faith to believe for a redeemed heart. This is the transfer of the outward and religious to the inward and relational. Sign preaching presses for and brings this transaction. There are many powerful signs throughout Scripture and history; the rainbow, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the brazen serpent, circumcision, baptism, the bread and wine, to name a few. The greatest of all signs is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. God’s power invaded every realm and destroyed and replaced sin and death with salvation and life. Jesus did not overcome sin and death; He destroyed sin and death. They are no more. The Sign did away with sin and death. He is Salvation and Life.
