OVERNIGHT SUCCESS II
Continuing with some thoughts from yesterday’s Journal entry of Overnight Success, I used this quote: “Timing, perseverance and ten years of trying, will eventually make you feel like an overnight success.” Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter.
Another lasting quote in my mind is from the wonderful President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) the 16th President of the United States:
“I will study and get ready and perhaps my time will come.”
His time came after a series of political defeats and set-backs. As President during the American Civil War (this was surely misnamed), he was also the primary figure in abolishing slavery in the United States (The Emancipation Proclamation).
I think forming the habits for Spiritual Disciplines surely falls into these categories, ‘timing, perseverance and years of trying’ are the usual path to formation. The Lincoln quote, ‘I will study and get ready and perhaps my time will come’ is very much a part of my history. However, in my case, and perhaps yours, it has been a continual ‘study and trying to stay ready’ for whatever the time brings.
“Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning, as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready to open the door and let him in the moment he arrives and knocks.” Jesus
