SOUNDS GOOD

‘Sounds good’ has become the familiar answer to a lot of statements and directives questions and inquiries. I have used it plenty of times myself. It is a safe response without commitment from either end of the conversation. What is being inferred is, “until I see proof, logic, progress, or money… or whatever… I will just wait and see.” We have said it sounds good… now is it good or not?

Another way of saying this is, ‘talk is cheap’ and I want to see actions that match the talk. Sounds are not actions. Along with this is the also familiar, “sounds like it’s headed in the right direction.” This phrase also leaves a lot of unanswered questions: mainly, your direction or mine, or both?

Not committing with a direct answer leaves everyone on safe ground. Maybe not particularly solid, but safe. In a little or no risk culture I suppose this is about the best we can do. Sounds good. That’s better than sounds bad.
