TALKING TRASH
“We throw out over 2 billion tons of household waste a year globally. That’s more than 60 tons of waste every second.
Californians throw away 6 pounds of trash every day, equivalent to almost 2200 pounds every year, roughly the weight of a subcompact car. These individual results more than double the state’s 2020 goal of 2.7 pounds per person per day (PPD).
Every year, U.S. landfills are filled with 139.6 million tons of waste, including:
30.63 million tons of food.
26.82 million tons of plastic.
18.35 million tons of paper and paperboard.
13.8 million tons of metals.
12.14 million tons of wood.
11.15 million tons of textile.
8.65 million tons of yard trimmings.
6.87 million tons of glass.
4.95 million tons of rubber & leather.
3.25 million tons of misc. inorganic waste.
2.98 million tons of other assorted materials.
To take our trash to the ‘landfill’ is still taking it somewhere. It is simply taking it to where we no longer might be. So, it’s gone… No, it isn’t. When we think like this we are truly ‘talking trash.’ The answer lies partly in careful Trash Recycling. Then, Waste-to-Energy Plants use trash as a fuel to generate power. The plants are expensive to build… so is the loss of our planet. We all need to do some trash talking.
