HE IS SO GREAT
Psalm 147 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving for Jerusalem’s restoration and prosperity. The Psalm begins with, ‘Praise, the Lord!’ and ends with, ‘Praise, the Lord!’ These kinds of psalms are known as Hallel psalms. They begin with hallelujah and end with hallelujah in Hebrew. Hallel is where we get hallelujah, or praise. The common Hallel psalms are 113-118 and then ending with psalms 145-150.
The praise is for the Lord that:
“Heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure. The Lord lifts up the downtrodden; he casts the wicked to the ground.” (Psalm 147:3-6)
It is praise for a Lord that understands those with marriage troubles, those with bad teeth, fifteen kinds of arthritis, kidney trouble…money trouble…dog and cat trouble… rent and car payment trouble…this stuff all comes down on a person like a hammer on a walnut. Smashed to pieces. How will I ever get out of this? This Psalm is to tell us there is an answer.
‘He is so great that nothing is great to him, and he is so condescending that nothing is little to him: his infinite majesty thus naturally brings low the lofty and exalts the lowly.’ (Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) British preacher and author’s comments on Psalm 147:6)
We have a high priest who sympathizes with us in our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15).
“He is so great that nothing is great to him…” What a line. What a truth.
“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you’ve hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and shown them to babies. Indeed, Father, this brings you happiness.” Jesus
